Safety Guidelines

Last updated: May 2, 2026

Important: All DIY recipes and formulations on Herbiskea are for educational purposes. Always perform a patch test before applying any new product. If you experience irritation, discontinue use immediately.

Patch Testing

Before using any new formulation on your skin or hair:

  1. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or behind your ear.
  2. Wait 24 to 48 hours and observe for redness, itching, or irritation.
  3. If any reaction occurs, do not use the product.
  4. If no reaction occurs, proceed with normal use.

Ingredient Safety

  • Essential oils must always be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to skin. Never use undiluted essential oils directly. Typical safe dilution is 1 to 2%.
  • Active ingredients like Vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, and retinoids should be introduced gradually. Start with lower concentrations and increase over time.
  • pH-sensitive ingredients: Some ingredients are only effective or safe within specific pH ranges. Our compatibility checker flags potential pH conflicts.
  • Preservatives are essential in any water-based formulation to prevent microbial growth. Do not skip preservatives in formulations that contain water.
  • Sun sensitivity: Some ingredients (citrus oils, AHAs, retinoids) increase sun sensitivity. Always use sunscreen when using products containing photosensitizing ingredients.

Formulation Best Practices

  • Sanitize everything: Clean and sanitize all containers, utensils, and work surfaces before formulating.
  • Measure precisely: Use a digital scale for accuracy. Small variations in active ingredients can affect safety and efficacy.
  • Label and date: Always label your products with ingredients and the date of creation.
  • Storage: Store products in cool, dark places. Most DIY formulations without commercial-grade preservatives should be used within 1 to 4 weeks.
  • Follow usage percentages: Our ingredient library provides recommended usage rates. Do not exceed maximum concentrations.

When to Seek Professional Help

Stop using any product and consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider if you experience:

  • Persistent redness, swelling, or irritation
  • Allergic reactions (hives, difficulty breathing, severe itching)
  • Burns or blistering
  • Worsening of existing skin or scalp conditions
  • Any unexpected or concerning reaction

Special Considerations

  • Pregnancy and nursing: Some ingredients (retinoids, certain essential oils) should be avoided during pregnancy. Consult your healthcare provider.
  • Children: DIY formulations are designed for adult use. Consult a pediatrician before using on children.
  • Known allergies: Check all ingredient lists carefully if you have known allergies. Our ingredient pages list common allergen information where available.
  • Medical conditions: If you have eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or other dermatological conditions, consult a specialist before trying new formulations.
